Apple seeks exemption from mandatory same charging port rule for older iPhones:
Representatives of Apple have sought exemptions for some older iPhones being assembled in India, citing the difficulty of altering the design of these older devices due to the company’s shift to a common charging port.
According to industry sources, the tech giant Apple has requested a waiver for changes in the mandatory charging port for some older iPhone models sold in India. The company has recently shifted to the USB Type-C charging port with the iPhone 15. However, Apple representatives have communicated that it would be challenging to modify the design of certain older iPhone models being assembled in India. The sources, choosing not to disclose their identity, stated that the company has faced difficulties in adapting the design of these older devices to the new charging port.
Apple has already introduced the Type-C charging port with the iPhone 15, indicating a strategic shift towards a universal charging port. However, the company’s representatives have specifically requested an exemption for certain older iPhone models in India, highlighting the complexity of altering the design of these devices.
As of now, there has been no immediate response to an email query sent to Apple seeking clarification on the matter. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has proposed the implementation of a universal charging port for all electronic devices, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s COPT-26-launched LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) mission aimed at reducing e-waste and facilitating ease of life for consumers.
Upon reaching out for comments, Pankaj Mohindroo, President of the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), stated that the mobile phone industry has already adopted the Type-C USB port for charging. He mentioned that the industry is fully aligned with the Indian government to implement the regulation covering all notified products, such as mobile phones, laptops, and tablets. The government has set a deadline for the enforcement of these regulations by June 2025.
The move towards a universal charging port is a collaborative effort between the electronics and IT ministry (MeitY) and the mobile phone industry. Pankaj Mohindroo emphasized the smooth transition for all covered products and expressed that the industry is working closely with MeitY to implement the regulations effectively.
The proposal for a common charging port is aimed at simplifying the transition for consumers and reducing electronic waste. It aligns with global efforts to create standardized charging solutions for electronic devices, contributing to environmental sustainability and consumer convenience.
